"What will you do?"
Welcome to Student Research at St. Bonaventure University. Opportunities for mentored, original work abound at St. Bonaventure and this site will guide you to these opportunities. Let's begin with a fundamental question...
What is Research?
"Research" has two principal meanings:
(1) a systematic investigation of a subject in order to discover or revise facts or theories; (2) a detailed report about a subject. The essential difference between these two definitions is that the first features the intent

of discovery and originality. We'll call the first type of research original research to distinguish it from a report. As an illustration, consider the subject of fostering child-parent relationships. Original research on this subject would seek new insights, which might result in, say, a new approach involving art as a means to forming therapeutic partnerships. (Katie Rogers '08 created just such an art-based approach, called "Drawing Families Together", as part of her Yankelovich Fellowship.) By contrast, a report on the same subject would be limited to studying existing information and theories about child-parent relationships. While the second type of research is enormously valuable and is often part of the first type of research, the purpose of our Student Research site is to highlight original research.
Opportunities for student research may be classified as research at SBU or research outside of SBU, as we explain below. Whatever its context, student research may be presented to the campus community and beyond through showcases for research.

Student Research at SBU
All student research at SBU is guided or mentored by one or more faculty members. Student research may be part of departmental research, that is, a research program within a particular department; a facet of one of the distinguished Bonaventure programs that feature research but are not part of a specific department; or both. Student Research Outside of SBU
Opportunities for student research are offered by certain institutions and agencies outside of SBU, typically in summer programs like research experiences for undergraduates (REUs) and internships. Bonaventure faculty can help a student find a summer program that interests him or her. Learn more about Student Research Outside of SBU.

Showcases for Student Research
Showcases for research or venues are opportunities for students to share their work with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and others. Each venue at St. Bonaventure and any venue beyond our campus has requirements that must be fulfilled in order for a student to participate, so it is an honor to be invited to a venue.
